The Library Above The Clouds (Kumo no Ue)

Yusuhara Community Library is situated in Yusuhara, a town far from the city center, surrounded by nature at the border of Kochi Prefecture.

With the abundance of nature surrounding the area, the common Japanese conifer (sugi) is the primary source used by famous designer Kengo Kuma for the library.

According to Kengo Kuma, the inspiration behind the design is the forest of Yusuhara.

The library’s facade is clad with a pattern of conifer wood.

The library aims to be a lively facility, which surpasses the stereotypical concept of libraries.

The interior is designed on three levels as if seemingly escalating up to the sky.

When looking above, a remarkable roof design fills the ceiling.

The interior atmosphere feels like a forest with falling rays of the sun.
