Stunning Scenery by Mother Nature | One of the Famous Sightseeing Spots in Shirahama

Witness the spectacular view of waves crashing through the bottom of the precipice from the observation deck. The rugged cliffs and sea surface with overpowering waves would make a perfect coastal terrace backdrop to your photos.

Sandanbeki is one of the popular rock formations in Shirahama. These massive rocks stand 60 meters tall and stretches for about 2 kilometers along the coast in the south of Senjojiki. The cliff is said to have originated from the word “Midan” (watchtower), a place where fishermen used to keep an eye on passing boats and schools of fish.

Arriving at the bus stop, you will see a line of food stalls and souvenir shops to your right. As you proceed further, past the stalls, lies a heart monument with countless heart locks. Just like the other heart lock sites around the world, couples can place a love lock here and promise for eternal love.

Speaking of eternal love, somewhere along the path towards the other end of Sandanbeki, if you look closely at your left, you will somehow end up at a narrow trail where the monument of lipstick stands. The route is unrecognizable because the bushes now have crawled towards the pathway which makes the monument hidden unless vigorously searched.

Proceeding further, the path leads you to a wide area full of rock formations. At this angle, the plateau offers a different kind of dramatic lookout of the cliff and the ocean.

Sandanbeki is easily accessible by bus from Shirahama station. From Shirahama station, purchase your tickets at the ticket booth and ride from the designated bus platform (which usually departs from platform 1). Alight at Sandanbeki bus station. The bus fee is ¥480 and it will take you about 24mins of travel time.

Admission is free in Sandanbeki.
